Final Project

I've been working with paper a lot for my project for the senior exhibition at the end of the year, so I wanted to explore the mixture of old and new mediums in this. It ended up being a reverse of what McLuhan describes as "new media [doing] the work of the old" (now the old, paper and photographs, is doing the work of the new, video). I was thinking a lot about time: "allatonceness" is shows through the timestamps, which mark when I compiled the video, taking less than a minute to watch (hence, the end timestamp is the same), and making the viewer think about their temporal location in relation to that. I find especially in watching videos, I feel displaced from temporality, in the sort of pocket of time that the creator of the video made when they published it for the world to see. I added my sound project as the track to the video because, upon playing it with the video just to see what would happen, it fit very well and, as a collage of sounds I hear throu

New Media Exhibition Reflection

This was a completely new process to me. I had never made a book, a print, or helped set up a exhibition before, so I learned a lot. I think its also good practice working in a group, as the whole class was involved. I got assigned to help with the poster, which was a struggle to create on the slow library computers, but they turned out okay in the end (after adjusting it on my own computer).       Having missed the process of adjusting lights and hanging the prints, it was really cool to walk in after it was all done. The class did a wonderful job and I loved walking around and looking at the prints and books! When they are all set up like that, they seem different than when they were presented in the classroom (not in a better or worse way, but the setting affects how the viewer contextualizes the photos).

Presentation: Jean Seberg

Presentation Link  The most striking part of researching Jean Seberg was the scarcity of academic texts on her. Most of my searches resulted in movie reviews and old newspaper articles, so it took a lot of piecing together to get a general idea of her life. It really made me think about what media is used to represent and talk about whom; in this case, newspapers gossiping about the young actresses life while film critics scrutinize her work. The result is a sensationalized, tragic story and very little about the woman herself.
