New Media Exhibition Reflection

    This was a completely new process to me. I had never made a book, a print, or helped set up a exhibition before, so I learned a lot. I think its also good practice working in a group, as the whole class was involved. I got assigned to help with the poster, which was a struggle to create on the slow library computers, but they turned out okay in the end (after adjusting it on my own computer). 

    Having missed the process of adjusting lights and hanging the prints, it was really cool to walk in after it was all done. The class did a wonderful job and I loved walking around and looking at the prints and books! When they are all set up like that, they seem different than when they were presented in the classroom (not in a better or worse way, but the setting affects how the viewer contextualizes the photos).

Introduction

     I struggle to introduce myself in general, much less specifically as an artist, so in this first post I shall pick out a few ideas and themes that I have enjoyed experimenting with in my art and hope to continue developing in the future. I hope this might shed some light onto me as an artist and as a person:      As an artist, I tend towards spontaneity, making loose plans for projects and seeing where they go. Final Project

Routine Moments- These simulated environments are an invitation to pause and really look at everyday conventions, suggesting absurdity and vacancy in constructions of normalcy and comfort. They are my own take on the sort of environment/ASMR themed videos all over YouTube (which can range from simulating a cafe on a rainy day to specific universes from books or films). Unlike those videos, mine are somewhat unpleasant, as I was reflecting on mental health struggles and emptiness in the routines that I use to get myself to get out of bed, to get work done, and to occasionally convince myself to leave my room. A few general notes: The quality of the videos is purposefully grainy; I took a video of a video as I thought it would add an interesting effect that better reflected the themes of my project. Reflection (Gina Adams's Lawrence Installation)

     Gina Adams was incredible to listen to; she was so friendly and patient, answering all the questions my Senior Seminar class had when we visited her before her talk. It's incredible how much she knows about each piece from memory: not only the intricacies of the treaties printed on them (which are difficult to read in so many ways), but also of the quilts (where she found them and the little history she could figure out about them) and the specific assistants who helped her make them. She would describe the various places where she found these old, lost, and forgotten quilts, disrupting their lost-and-forgotten-ness as they became canvases, to be viewed by many, for the treaties that have been given their own supposed lost-and-forgotten-ness by a society that continues to marginalize, silence, and oppress indigenous communities.
