Introduction
I struggle to introduce myself in general, much less specifically as an artist, so in this first post I shall pick out a few ideas and themes that I have enjoyed experimenting with in my art and hope to continue developing in the future. I hope this might shed some light onto me as an artist and as a person:
As an artist, I tend towards spontaneity, making loose plans for projects and seeing where they go. Frequently, mistakes or faults lead to an end result that is significantly different than what I’d planned, being incorporated into whatever project I’m working on along the way and generating new ideas. I like art where the artist’s process of creating is present. Or perhaps I just like chaos…
It’s also an example of how I’ve been thinking about ‘incompleteness’ and when an art piece is ‘finished’. This partially arose as I took shortcuts to meet deadlines, resulting in new ideas of how empty space can be used. McLuhan, in The Medium is the Massage, talks about fragmentation, saying, “[t]he alphabet is a construct of fragmented bits and parts which have no semantic meaning in themselves, and which must be strung together in a line, bead-like, an in a prescribed order” (44). However, I sometimes struggle to follow an artistic plan through, so I‘ve learned to embrace the fragmented and seemingly ‘incomplete’.
Overall, I always end up liking the art I have the most fun creating, which last year was my final project for my art class (I really gave up on being ‘sophisticated’ or ‘meaningful’ at this point because online classes had resulted in burnout, so I decided to just aim to have fun):
