Laurie Simmons

 Laurie Simmons's photography work with dolls has evolved over time to different levels of hyperreality. Starting out with a focus on doll houses and the artificiality of the suburbs, she has added layers of complexity through engaging with niche subcultures (learning of them through the internet) and how they reflect and challenge reality, simulations, and social constructs. This progresses to a point where the viewer is unsure where reality begins and ends.

Soundscape

    I won't pretend to know fully what I was doing in creating this – it was more of an experiment than anything. The main theme – our environmental soundscape – it so chaotic that I figured it was okay to leave it a bit chaotic and strange. I used recordings of playing and cleaning and putting away my clarinet (as a clarinet major, that is a big part of my soundscape), the fan in my room, and the sound of stirring my daily cup of tea. I think that's it, which is wild considering how strange they sound once I finished. Even the sounds that are distinctly recognizable (even after I added an effect) become ambiguous and foreign with no context or visual, which I found fascinating. I decided to use them in a more overlapping manner: reflecting on how "the ear world is a world of simultaneous relationships" (McLuhan 111). Reflection (Valaria Tatera's Lawrence Installation)

    Regrettably, I missed the artist talk (due to a busy day and a slip of the brain... alas being a faulty human can be so frustrating). However, I did do a bunch of online research reading articles and watching videos about Valaria Tatera (links below), as well as visiting the installation, so my reflection will be on that:      The best resource I found was Valaria Tatera's website , which I highly recommend checking out. In it, she says, "[m]y approach to sculpture is process orientated, incorporating the tradition of production into an object," and idea that is reflected in the 'process' section of her portfolio. A series of photos lay bare the different stages of the process, just as the 'finished' works, through repetition of individual elements, visually reveals the length of the proce ss. She seems to play with time and temporality, with the ribbons of "Justice MMIGW" providing a visual tactility that pulls one into the immediate present...

Final Project

Routine Moments- These simulated environments are an invitation to pause and really look at everyday conventions, suggesting absurdity and vacancy in constructions of normalcy and comfort. They are my own take on the sort of environment/ASMR themed videos all over YouTube (which can range from simulating a cafe on a rainy day to specific universes from books or films). Unlike those videos, mine are somewhat unpleasant, as I was reflecting on mental health struggles and emptiness in the routines that I use to get myself to get out of bed, to get work done, and to occasionally convince myself to leave my room. A few general notes: The quality of the videos is purposefully grainy; I took a video of a video as I thought it would add an interesting effect that better reflected the themes of my project.
